| Description: | The story of RAF Bomber Command has been widely criticised and misunderstood ever since 1945. Terrible suffering occurred as a result of its operations, on both sides. Horrendous losses were suffered by the very young aircrew, from many nations, who served in this campaign, all of whom were volunteers. This was the most dangerous role amongst any of the Allied forces. To put it into perspective, more men were lost by the RAF in one night than during the whole of the entire Battle of Britain. For most of the War, this was the only meaningful way of taking the conflict to the enemy and, ultimately, made a contribution to the defeat of the Axis powers. The sacrifice of these brave airmen deserves to be understood and remembered. |
Steven Tindall served for 30 years in the RAF, one of the highlights of which was operating the Lancaster bomber of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF).
