Description: The title is the question, Why does it look like that? This is a course where the language of artists and the work they produce are central. These sessions will focus on art work up to the end of the nineteenth century. This part begins with a look at the British landscape tradition, centred on Constable and Turner but extending to others. Then we look at the art of portraits and self-portraits. We move on to the advances in science, technology and culture which make Paris the centre of artistic endeavour throughout the 19th century. Discussion and questions are encouraged and are, in fact, essential.
