Get Involved!

Canterbury u3a thrives thanks to our incredible community of over a thousand members and the amazing volunteer teams who make our diverse courses and activities possible. A huge thank you to everyone who contributes to our success—your hard work is much appreciated!

To keep this momentum going, we need more volunteers to step forward and get involved. No contribution is too small! Please browse our current vacancies below to see how you can get involved.

  • Welcome Team. This is a role for those who enjoy meeting/greeting people especially new joiners who need to feel welcomed at our main events such as Monthly Meetings and Joining Days.   Please do consider joining the team.
  • Committee Support: We are looking for people to join a pool of minute takers to enable accurate records of our monthly Committee meetings.  You will need minute taking experience and good admin skills.  A vital role!
  • Membership Team: We are seeking volunteers to join a small, friendly team to help during January, February and March 2027 - the busy period when membership annual subscriptions are due. Help is needed with processing cheque payments and placing posters around Canterbury.  You would need basic familiarity sending emails and be reasonably fit. Full training will be given.
  • Help Desk Team: The Help Desk  is located in the Starr Place office and provides help and support to enquirers in person, by phone, email and post.  A great role for someone who has good admin and IT skills and likes helping people.
  • Hospitality Team: The team provides refreshments at all of our events and we are always looking for more people to give a hand. Please do help if you can.
  • Web Editor:  Our website is essential for delivering news, courses, and events to our members.  The Web Manager and various group leaders keep their respective sections updated, but content gaps still exist.  We are looking for a Web Editor to help us bridge these gaps and maintain an up-to-date site. We’re seeking a tech-savvy volunteer comfortable using web applications.  Experience with WordPress or similar is ideal, but full training and support are provided.  You’ll also have access to resources like the u3a Author Guide to help you. Interested? Then please contact Alan West, Web Manager.

If you are able to help with any of our current vacancies please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Marjorie Brown. You can also ring the Starr Office on 01227 634569 Weds & Thurs, 11am to 1pm, and leave a message; Marjorie will get back to you.

Not sure where you fit in? If you want to help but don't know where to start, get in touch - we will gladly help you find the right role!

Getting involved with Canterbury u3a not only brings benefits to our organisation, it’s good for you too!  Volunteering is a fantastic way to meet people who share your interests, beat loneliness, boost your confidence, and pick up some amazing new skills along the way. Here are a few comments from some of our current volunteers:

After leaving work, volunteering keeps you active in mind and body. u3a is a good cause. It feels worthwhile to contribute to the community and be able to reach out to those who may feel lonely and want to socialise.

I volunteer because I am now available to do so and want to continue to meet others. It is fulfilling and I like helping others and working as part of a team.

I enjoy running the Skiffle Group which I hope gives people pleasure, both performers and anyone wanting to listen to us.
Rob

I like to meet and greet people, to make them welcome and answer any questions – if I don’t know the answer I will find someone who does!
